I promise to update previous and future blogs soon, but for the next week I will be missing in action whilst in the hot sun in Greece! The last few weeks have been the busiest and most exciting weeks to date and I'm so looking forward to persuing placements and opportunities when I return!

So the long awaited results were published yesterday, in complete chaos I might add. But, after waiting for a while and reaching the 'table of fate' I got the envelope. I decided to wait with a few others to open them together and find out how we stood after 3 years of hard work and long nights! Personally... a 2.1 for me. Pretty happy with that! It was pretty much what I expected after receiving a 66 in my first assessment, as well as knowing my dissertation was no where good enough to bring it up to a first! The others in my group seemed to do as well as expected so all in all it was a pretty good day!

The Coach House

A beautiful house and gardens situated in Hatfield, was my project of choice this time last year as my last year two project. This is one of the few projects I'm still fairly happy with, the logo in particular. In short, I decided to re brand the logo of the restaurant 'The Coach House' within the grounds. I have tried to incorporate a subtle element from both the gardens and the restaurant.

And so forth... I seem to be rather busy at the moment, silly me thinking it was all over after assessment! But I shouldn't complain. I'm one of the lucky ones that have been chosen to go down to D&AD's New Blood Exhibition this year and exhibit my work. Even luckier, I'm signed up for the portfolio surgery down there where my portfolio (a work in progress) gets looked at by designers at top agencies! It's my first time at D&AD so I'm excited and hopeful that some good experiences and contacts will come of this. If nothing else, the opportunity is something to be grateful for and will be made the most of!

In the mean time...

NUCA exhibition. I'm currently working on formatting A1 posters for the exhibition on the 22nd June (not long to go) and developing a show reel to be used at NUCA as well as 'down south'. I'm hoping this will be a way of communicating so the audience remember my work and of course, me!

So my idea is to hopefully snap something each day and upload it, with the aim to compile something at the end of it... not sure what yet! I'm hoping these will improve my photography skills and my awareness of every day objects which will in turn, improve my design skills.

So, i've been attempting to build my own website (successfully I might add!) with the help of this fantastic website.

Recommended by Chris Johnson of Void of Design, it's for all levels and definitely worth looking into, especially if you're aiming to design and build a website. There are some brilliant features on there including an area you can test your html to see if it works, before pasting into your own coding. This has definitely helped me and will hopefully help you too.

Have a scroll down and see my compliment slip if you wish, my question is, do I need to say 'with compliments' or does it suit being a simple piece with my logo on it?

There are arguments that it's an 'unwritten rule' of design where it's courtesy to have it, and that people expect it. However, with the contemporary design emerging, and the way the world is developing with abreviations, is it a necessity in today's designs?

FMPA2 - The Body Shop

The 3 posters and the booklet below form part of my final project, for The Body Shop. The aim is to promote their ethical sourcing of natural, pure ingredients. It's work in progress so please, any feedback would be appreciated!

I'm also in need of an illustrator to collaborate with on this particular project, as you can see the illustrations above do the job but preferably I'd like somebody that knows what they're doing to produce some striking illustration for the pieces above. So I've been trying to work on some self promotion/branding to help get into industry and give me the best chance of acquiring a job as possible. I've designed a business card, letterhead, compliment slip and mock up web layout for the home page, with a CV to support these. The idea is to keep it as simple as possible and straight to the point.

Any comments or improvements you think could be made are welcomed!

So today was an extremely productive day! It started with the most useful and beneficial crit I've had in my entire education! Andy sat me down and broke down the D&AD Body Shop brief with me, to give my ideas a focus and direction, rather than trying to say 100 different things in one advertising campaign! I then got cracking with ideas and passed this information onto my peers.

The afternoon I spent in the lecture theatre listening to Laura Jordan from SheSays and LBi, speak about the advertising world with examples of different ways adverts have been approached. This in itself was invaluable to my Body Shop project and helping me think about my ideas and how they relate. Laura spoke about 7 points that are useful to think about, that are spoken in more depth in the book 'Nudge'

1.Loss Aversion: Company's tend to work harder at not losing something rather than trying to gain.

2. The Power of Now! Trying to persuade the consumer at the time of purchase, not necessarily hours, days or weeks before.

3.Scarcity Value: Using small runs of products increases sales as it's in higher demand, they don't wnt to miss out!

4.Goal Dilution: Achievable, specific goals rather than lots of goals at one time.

5. Chunking: Changing a person's behavior in stages rather than in one big action

6. Price Perception: Putting a higher price on an object or service means consumers portray the product as being a higher quality

7. Choice Architecture: Placing an object or service in comparison to something at a significantly higher price than what you're selling, automatically increases the amount of money the consumer is willing to spend

These are just my notes from the lecture Laura gave, I aim to read the book she recommended and learn more about persuasive advertising and how to improve my advertising skills.

Designing your CV

Just a quick word to help anyone preparing a CV ready for job interviews etc! As a designer it's important to create a CV that's interesting, unique and most importantly, one that reflects you as a person and a designer. Whilst researching ways of doing this, I came across a very useful website that explains do's and don'ts, content you should include and examples of CVs. Hope this helps:

Thrigby Hall

These are just a few of the photographs I've taken after a visit to Thrigby Hall in Great Yarmouth. It's a lovely place and definitely worth a visit, especially to practice a bit of photography and enjoy a day out! They are unedited for now but I intend to improve the photos and my editing skills.

It's a really nice insight into the world of street art and without giving away too much, not what you'd necessarily expect. After looking through my portfolio of old work I thought I'd update this profile (as it's been a while!)

These were designed in 2008 whilst in my second year of a Foundation Degree in Graphic Design. As part of an integrated project with illustrators, I was to art direct a series of book covers, for 2 different books. I was lucky enough to work with my tutors with top notch illustrations!

Ok so I'm cooking dinner and my friend Kat is sitting on the chair and pulls out an absolutely gorgeous, bright orange, vintage typewriter! I've decided I definitely want one! She's producing little Christmas postcards with them with little rhymes such as 'look at me I'm a tree you can hang sweeties on me' etc :) soooo cute it's unbelievable!

Ok so, for my dissertation i'm focusing on two campaigns, the 1994 Wonderbra 'Hello Boys' and the 2007 advertising for Tom Ford's 'first fragrance for men'

Last week, we were set a brief of doing something that wasn't necessarily graphics and explore otherareas such an annomation, ilustration, photography etc. I chose to work with two other girls on my course (Nina and Laura) and we had a really good week! The photo's weren't amazing but this is probably my favourite out of the 3 we did.

We even managed to blag a photoshoot at Odeon cinema in some posh hidden away section :)

Well, I suppose this is technically my 'first post' so far.
I've settled into my third year at Norwich University College of the Arts pretty well! I no longer feel like the 'new girl' and more like a proper student!
I've already had an advertising and a branding brief and now I'm just starting on the packaging one. Four different options and more options within those so I had better decide quickly - I only have two weeks for this one!

The on going dissertation is, well, not that on going. I've yet to write anything and I have 5 weeks left for the 5,000 words! However, I have written the plan and the title 'Sex sells, but should it?'

I hope to update most days, or whenever anything interesting happens, with interesting links too :)
